The mission of The One Hundred is to promote the health of children in
the hospitals service area through advocacy, education and financial support
of the Backus Children's Hospital at Memorial Health University Medical
Center.

The One Hundred
is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization, is comprised of volunteers
dedicated to support the George & Marie Backus Children's Hospital
in Savannah, Georgia. It was founded in 1994 when Dr. Edwin Shepard, a
Savannah Pediatrician, met with five individuals to discuss developing
a support organization for the Children’s Hospital. All agreed there
was a compelling need to focus public attention on the hospital, Savannah
children and their healthcare needs. That initial group of five expanded
to nineteen and The One Hundred was created.
To date, we have raised over $ 1.8 Million for specialized medical equipment,
education programs and services for the Children’s Hospital.
Examples of our projects include the following:
A) $100,000 towards the renovation
and expansion of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
B) $50,000 for furnishings and interiors for a new outreach
Pediatric Rehab Center in Pooler, Georgia
C) Renovation of the largest room in the In-patient Unit
Our membership has grown to 145 men & women who enjoy the many volunteer opportunities at the hospital including rocking newborns, working at the concierge desk, assisting with pediatric rehabilitation and participating in our educational programs.
The One Hundred also sponsors fund-raising activities throughout the year including our signature Bear Gala held in the fall of each year. In 2006 and 2007, we raised over $250,000 at our “ BearItalia” Gala.We are always looking to expand our membership and participation in our many activities.
